At Lanetti, securing your website and data is a top priority. One way to enhance that security is by using Web Disk with proper password protection. Web Disk is a feature in cPanel that allows you to manage website files remotely, as if they were part of a network drive on your computer. By protecting Web Disk access with strong credentials, you help prevent unauthorized users from accessing sensitive website files.
This guide explains how to create, configure, and protect Web Disk accounts using the cPanel interface.
What Is Web Disk?
Web Disk (also known as WebDAV) is a cPanel feature that lets you access and manage files in your hosting account through your operating system’s file manager (e.g., Finder on macOS or File Explorer on Windows). Once configured, you can drag, drop, and modify files on your server just like working with local files.
By default, each Web Disk account requires a username and password. These credentials provide a layer of protection. However, it’s important to manage them carefully and ensure users only have access to the directories they need.
How to Set Up and Password Protect the Web Disk
Step 1: Log in to Your cPanel.
-
Open a browser and go to: https://yourdomain.com/cpanel.
-
Enter your username and password, then click Log in.
Step 2: Access the Web Disk Tool.
-
In the cPanel dashboard, scroll to the Files section.
-
Click Web Disk to open the management interface.
Step 3: Create a Web Disk Account (if needed).
If you haven’t created a separate Web Disk user:
-
Under Create a Web Disk Account, fill in:
-
Username – A unique name for the user.
-
Password – A secure password (or use the generator).
-
Directory – The folder the user should access (e.g., public_html or a subfolder).
-
Permissions – Choose:
-
Read-Write – Full access (upload, edit, delete).
-
Read-Only – View-only access.
-
-
-
Click Create to finish.
Note: The primary cPanel user also has Web Disk access to the home directory.
How to Change or Secure Passwords for Existing Web Disk Users
If you've already created a Web Disk user and want to update or secure their credentials:
-
Scroll down to Existing Accounts.
-
Find the account you want to update.
-
Click Change Password or Manage.
-
Enter a new strong password (use the generator if needed).
-
Click Change Password to save.
Now your Web Disk user account is protected by a new password.
How to Access Web Disk with Password Protection
Once the Web Disk user is configured:
-
Return to the Web Disk section in cPanel.
-
Under your user account, click Access Web Disk.
-
Follow the instructions for your operating system (Windows, macOS, Linux).
-
During setup, enter the Web Disk username and password when prompted.
Note: On some systems, you may need to enable WebDAV or install a helper utility.
Security Tips for Web Disk

Limit access to specific directories whenever possible.
-
Use Read-Only access for non-technical team members or external users.

Troubleshooting Tips
-
Can’t connect? – Ensure WebDAV is supported by your OS and not blocked by a firewall.
-
Incorrect credentials? – Double-check username format (e.g., user@domain.com) and password.
-
Permission denied? – Check that the user has access to the correct directory.
-
SSL/TLS errors? – Try connecting via the secure Web Disk URL: https://yourdomain.com:2078.
